Blissdom Bound!

Yes, it’s that time of year…

It’s Blissdom Time!!

In a little over a day, I will be on a plane with this lovely lady, on our way to Nashville for an amazing week with some of my favorite people, and while I will be missing my family something awful, there will be lots to occupy my time – FABULOUS sessions, speakers, and to top it all off, Chris Mann, Joe Jonas AND Rascal Flatts!!

I’m equally excited to meet lots of new (and not-so-new) attendees, so for them, a bit about me:

I am a Southern California born (but Southern bred) mom of 2 squirrely boys, ages 9 and 6. I spent 15 years as a hairstylist, and it was my dream job – I got paid to be social, make women GORGEOUS, and play in makeup, mousse, and curlers. I decided to become a stay-at-home mom when my oldest was born 13 weeks premature. I discovered blogging after my youngest was born in 2005, and was looking for other moms to connect with. Domestic Chicky was born in November of 2005 as a way to share my awkward attempts to be a modern day Martha Stewart.

Don’t laugh – it could happen!

I may not have the cooking and cleaning mastered, but I did have the accessories! I fell in love with Aprons, and founded The Apronista in 2007 to share my love for aprons. It quickly grew as more and more people fell for aprons, and last year I turned it over to the fabulous Shawnee, whose love for aprons is equal to my own.

I also developed a knack for blog design, and launched Design Chicky around the same time – I have been blessed to work with mom bloggers, food bloggers, gossip blogs, and even a few corporations! I love coaching new bloggers on the ins and outs of blogging and social media.

In my spare time (HA!), I have followed a lifelong love of photography into a business I am passionate about as well. I love taking pictures of adorable babies, families and kids, but I REALLY love doing boudoir. Not glamour shots, or Maxim style, but just showing EVERY woman that they are beautiful and SEXY.

On the personal side, I love GLITTER, cupcakes, books, flea markets, Pinterest, vintage anything, dried mango, good coffee, funky eyeglasses and a really good steak.

Life, bucket, to-do…

I love that so many people have their Life Lists on their blogs – I enjoy seeing what people dream of doing, and sometimes I get ideas for my own list. I am usually an optimistic person, and count my blessings on a regular basis, but there are things I can’t imagine NOT doing at some point:

  • Paris – always the top of my list. I’ve been in love with all things French since I can remember. My friend and I are vowing to go the summer of 2016.
  • Travel the US by RV – I was lucky enough to be a Navy kid. Lucky in that I got to see a lot of this country, and at the same time not enough. I would love to take a year, homeschool my kids and see the amazing country we live in.
  • Take Ballet again – I took classes as a kid, and I remember feeling so limber and coordinated – not like the lumbering hippo I feel like now – lol. This one I can do something about now – I found some free exercise videos on my cable box!
  • Create a photography studio co-op. Shhh….top secret idea!
  • Have a garden – grow veggies, fruit, herbs…I love the idea of being able to enjoy fresh picked produce from my backyard – especially tomatoes!

Well, there’s a few anyway. I think I might make a page just for the list and add to it as I come up with other ideas, I would love to hear what’s on your list in the comments!

I got smurfed!

I was a bit skeptical when I heard there was going to be a live action/cgi movie made about the Smurfs. I didn’t think the current generation of kids would be interested in the little blue guys (and girl!) and all their smurfiness -

Get Smurfed

I am willing to admit when I’m wrong :)

I was invited to be part of a press event at Sony’s Imageworks studio to get a sneak preview, see some behind-the-scenes action and interview a few of the people involved with the movie – AND to get my smurf on! (go chicky, get your smurf on, go chicky, get your smurf on…)

While we only saw a few clips from the movie, I can confidently say this is one movie we won’t be missing – producer Jordan Kerner (Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web) and Director Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Never been Kissed) spoke about “suspension of disbelief” and they were spot-on…the cgi and live action blended seamlessly, and it was easy to ENJOY the movie and not be conscious of that how-did-they-do-that aspect. My favorite part of the day was talking with two of the live action actors. Jayma Mays (Miss Pilsbury from Glee) plays Grace Winslow, who is a newly pregnant woman married to Neil Patrick Harris (lucky girl!).

So adorable!

Hank Azaria plays Gargamel, the smurfs’ arch enemy and nemesis. Hank may be well known for his voice-over work, but he’s been a part of some of my favorite movies, like Quiz Show, The Birdcage, and America’s Sweethearts. (have to admit a slight crush here)

swoon

It was fun to ask them about acting against the stickers and wires representing the smurfs, and I got to ask Hank about creating a chatacter who was only played by one other person (the iconic Paul Winchell). He said he at first tried to create a voice that was NOT like the original, but as the character evolved, it became much closer to Paul Winchell’s original voice-over. (/total geek moment)

We then got to try two different technologies involved in making the movie – animating a character using Mya software, and doing a voice over of one of the Smurfs! Animating a smurf was so much fun – it took a bit of getitng used to, but once you get the hang of it, it wasn’t super hard, just time-consuming. It was amazing to find out how many hours of work it took just to create a small bit of cgi animation.

Now about getting Smurfed – we got to choose which character we voiced, and since there is only ONE female smurf, I picked Smurfette (voiced by Katy Perry).  We were given a script, and viewed the bit of the movie we would be voicing. Then we went into the voiceover studio, which was a small, simple room with a screen and mic. After a couple of rehearsals, it was time to record. Let me tell you, it is NOT as easy as it might seem, but it was LOTS of fun! Here is me in all my smurfy glory:

I am looking forward to taking my kids to see this, and it will be even better having the little bit of behind the scenes trivia in my head while I watch :) The Smurfs movie will be released July 29.

I give it 5 (out of 5) chickies!

Disclosure – I was invited to this press event, but was otherwise not compensated by Sony for this review – all opinions are strictly mine, including that Hank Azaria is dreamy…
