Picnik Tutorial – simple edits = big impact

Do you ever look at your pictures and think – it’s a good picture, but it just NEEDS something…

Yeah, me too..ALL the time. Unfortunately not all of us can afford photoshop, but there IS an affordable , fun alternative – Picnik! I heard about picnik right after they launched and it has been a lot of fun to see all the goodies they have added since the beginning. The best part is it’s FREE. There is a premuim membership that is $25 a year, and allows you to do some pretty fun stuff, but all the edits I will do today are available on the free version…

Last week we had a HUGE snowstorm (hey, it’s California – any snowstorm is huge to us!). This was one of my favorite images from the day and my wordless Wednesday picture:

Not a bad picture, decent composition, captures the scene…but it could be better.

I opened up the photo in picnik, and chose the exposure tab. I slid the top slider (exposure) to the right to about 25. Then I boosted the contrast a bit – about 10.

After that, I went to create, then effects, and chose “vignetting” (vin-yetting) – which is really just a schmancy word for “framing”. I didn’t edit it much beyond what the standard setting is, and here is the after:

Much better, don’t you think? It just LOOKS colder in the after picture!

Now it’s YOUR turn!! I have installed this nifty plug in on my blog that lets you upload your own pictures to the comments! Show me your favorite photos and tell us how you edited them…I will post a couple next week and who knows – maybe we’ll have a special drawing!

PS – me and a few of my fellow picture-loving friends will be doing a fabulous one on one wisdom workshop at this years Blissdom in Nashville – You are signed up for it, right? ;)

…and baby makes 3

We were so lucky to be able to meet this little guy when he was just a few days old. He’s the newest member of the family of one of our oldest friends, and I wanted to give them some nice pictures to remember this precious time -

We decided to take the long way home thru Northern Arizona - I had NO idea how beautiful it was up there – especially Sedona. I definitely want to take another trip JUST to go back…

I think my favorite sight was this little shack next to a house along the side of the road just outside Flagstaff -

This trip went really well considering this was the boys’ first long driving trip, and first overnight trip – they especially loved staying in a hotel, and eating at their first cracker barrel. The last leg of the drive home was especially long and tiring, but we all slept REALLY well our first night back home…

PS – these pictures were taken with my new toy – Sony’s new 50mm 1.8 lens – such dreamy sharp images!

Spring Cleaning?

Maybe mid-winter cleaning – all I know is I have been sorely neglecting my house, and this weekend I got a sudden burst of energy – I NEEDED to clean, toss and organize…I (we) put the boys bunk beds together, painted, took the Christmas tree down (finally!), scrubbed sinks, counters, tubs, floors and carpets. Oh, and did every bit of laundry I could get my hands on.

I think my creative mojo has been hiding under my running to-do list. You know – “I would make an apron, but gee, I still have x, y, and z to do.”  So now I have (almost) no excuse.

I DO have something exciting to share – I entered my picture of my son from our beach trip into Amy and Angie’s “I heart faces” photo contest, and I got 5th place! I am SOO excited! There was a LOT of great competition too!!

Ocean Eyes

It’s a great site with some AMAZING images – I am THRILLED they liked mine!
