I was given a challenge (and a $50 Gift card) to do my shopping at Walmart this year for our Thanksgiving dinner. I decided to make it really interesting…I made a list of the items I would need to make all of the side items for our feast (we get a turkey every year from my husband’s employer) and noted the prices at the grocery store closest to our house.
Menu
- Turkey (which we already had)
- Ham
- PW’s Mashed Potatoes
- PW’s Soul Sweet Potatoes
- Cornbread stuffing with Apples and Cranberries
- Green Bean Casserole
- Spoon Bread (I add half a cup of sugar to this)
- Apricot Jello salad (recipe below!)
- Watergate salad (remember this stuff from the 70’s? YUM)
- Rolls
- Pies (contributed by my in-laws)
My local grocery store didn’t even have one of the items for the Apricot Jello salad!
So then I took my list to Walmart – I knew I would probably save a little bit of money, but I was blown away to have saved a little over 25% over the prices at my usual store, and most of the walmart prices were their everyday prices. I saved on fresh produce, pantry items, and even my ham! It’s definitely going to make me think twice about making the short drive to walmart for my shopping…I love too that I can find not-so-common items at Walmart too (green goddess dressing anyone??)
Apricot Jello Salad
Ingredients
- One can of Apricots
- 2 boxes of Apricot Jello (the missing item – I have substituted Orange in a pinch)
- One box of dream whip
- milk
Add Hot water to both packages of Jello as directed on box in a large bowl. Chill and allow to set slightly. While you’re waiting, make 2 packets of the dream whip according to directions – allow to chill. Put drained, canned Apricots in food processor/blender til thoroughly blended. Set aside. Take out the jello, and add between 1/3 and 1/2 of the dream whip and the apricots to the jello mixture. Mix thoroughly and put in a 9×13 pan. Allow to set slightly, then put the remaining dream whip on top and allow to set thoroughly – then enjoy!!
